1, 2, 3 Crush…1, 2, 3 Kill…1, 2, 3 Damage…1, 2, 3 Grind…1, 2, 3 Sete-Star-Sept! This Japanese grindnoise band reworked harsh, out-the-box sonic madness into a gnarly 2010 release entitled Revision Of Noise, out now via Fuck Yoga. So what do you get with this album? 15 songs clocking in at just over 15 minutes, and every song is a short bombastic burst of aggro energy! What sticks in my brain about this album are the audio monsters that live under the layers of grind, and seem to share the spirit of jazz or other avant garde music. Then you have the metallic giants that roam the streets of Revision Of Noise, kicking over the garbage cans so that the grindcore rats eat away at the riffs that spew across the pavement. Sete-Star-Sept are wizards at transforming a cyco moment of chaos into an all-out righteous rage and fury. Even though I can’t understand a word of the vocals, I feel where they are coming from 200%. As songwriters, Sete-Star-Sept are smart as fuck, because they have realized with a genre like this, it’s the weird things that make the music more interesting, and that’s why you will encounter many sonic revolutions on this album. I really dig the way that this band has molded hardcore, classic metal riffs and grindcore into their own zany universe of metallic drama. Sete-Star-Sept also keep a constant flow of chaotic grooves weaving themselves in and out of their compositions. When you hear Revision Of Noise, you might think you are listening to a full band, but it’s only two humans conjuring up all of the rad noises you encounter.

Sete Star Sept - Revision Of Noise (Fuck Yoga Records)

Japan could be said that they are internationally-known for their grindcore, and if that is true, Tokyo’s Sete Star Sept could partially be held responsible. Outside of grind, their lineup is unconventional; only two members front this band and play with out any session musicians, at venues, such as Earthdom, with fellow-grind band, Su19b, and local death legends, Coffins. They can be said to have had their share of live performances and they have even played possibly the first-ever grind show at Yokosuka’s legendary bar, Fuck Yeah’s. Don’t be mistaken, readers who dislike grind; Sete Star Sept appear to be much more than ‘Just another grind band’, and “Revision of Noise”, their latest offering, is a kick in the mouths of those who ever short-credited this powerful outfit.

What first got my attention from “Revision of Noise” was that there were only 19 tracks to the release, and the music seems to be much longer than the everyday grind bands (or are the songs grouped together properly, with little gaps in between tracks?). I personally believe this to be better (grind fans, hear me out, and hate me later!). The testosterone on “Revision of Noise” does not rip you off or short-change you with only a few measly seconds. Do not get me wrong. There are blatantly-short tracks, yet the music seems to be composed with more quality than the 0.5 second-song-bands.

To further compliment their raging music, there are adequate amounts of great, slow, and catchy riffs, that break the music up better. When paired, the grinding explosions and chaos-inspiring, ear-killing vocals arise with that much more power. There are plenty of Death / Thrash / Black / Doom elements layered within this insane album, so almost any extreme metal fan may find himself or herself headbanging along to the audible-madness that “Revision of Noise “has to offer.In conclusion, I say that this album is indeed worth a listen! Sete Star Sept have really made a revision of the noise, that seem to be taking the extreme blast-beats, blazing guitars, and the grunts and shrieks to a new level, with this interesting and diverse masterpiece of chaos!

Sete Star Sept – „Revision Of Noise“ (Fuck Yoga/Idoneum Bello)

Grindcore ist so eine Sache. Viele Releases sind mir einfach zu Metal/Death Metal orientiert. Ja Grindcore wirkt oft wie ein Metalgenre. Es gibt aber auch einige wenige (mal mehr, mal weniger) Grindcore-Bands die ich sehr schätze, wie Yacøpsæ, Systral, Daughters, As The Sun Sets, Cadaver In Drag und nun auch Sete Star Sept. Wenn man es genau nimmt, spielen Sete Star Sept auch eher Metal als Hardcore Punk. Gitarren und Schlagzeug sind Metal orientiert. Aber der Aufbau der Songs bzw. die Umsetzung erinnert dann doch wieder an Hardcore. Kaum länger als eine Minute dauert so ein durchschnittliches Stück auf Revision Of Noise. Die Gitarren sind dabei immer höchst nervös, unberechenbar und auch technisch anspruchsvoll, aber nie Death Metal typisch verkopft. Was bei der kurzen Songlänge auch kaum geht. Das Drumming steht dabei den Gitarren in Sachen Dynamik in nichts nach. Chaoscore wenn man so will und so ist man geneigt trotz Metalriffs und Blastbeats die Band eher im Core-Sektor einzuordnen. Das ist wohl die Transzendenz des Grindcore. Die vorwiegend High Pitched Screams von Kae tun ihr übriges. Das Organ der Dame hat einen großen Anteil an der Intensivität des Albums. Was auch daran liegt, dass die Vocals ziemlich nach vorne gemischt sind. Die Produktion von Revision Of Noise ist perfekt gelungen. Weder zu fett und steril noch zu dünn und breiig. Hab ich schon erwähnt das die Mischung aus durch Mark und Bein gehenden Schreiattacken, chaotischen Gitarrenstrukturen und aggressiven Drumming richtig richtig heftig ist?! Revision Of Noise gehört im Bereich schneller Gitarrenmusik zu den extremsten Veröffentlichungen der letzten 20+ Jahre. Viele mag das überfordern. Auch machen die Japaner keine Musik zum fröhlich durch die Gegend springen. Sete Star Sept erschüttern, überrollen einen mit ihren hyperaggressiven und intelligenten Kompositionen und verlangen ein gewissen Maß an Aufmerksamkeit. Schenkt man diese der 12“, wird man mit immer wieder neuen Details und Facetten belohnt. Übrigens haben nur drei! Leute das Album eingespielt. Revision Of Noise ist mit dem tollen Artwork und interessanten Texten ein Gesamtkunstwerk. Gut, die abstrakten und frei interpretierbaren Lyrics sind Geschmackssache, aber ich finde sie großartig. Hier wird eine gewisse Ohnmacht gegenüber der Welt passend ausgedrückt, was die emotionale Komponente der Lieder noch weiter verstärkt. Der Band ist in meinen Augen ein Meisterwerk gelungen. Wer Fan extremster Klänge ist und hier nicht mal ein Ohr riskiert, ist selber schuld. 10/10

HOSTILE LIFE – SKATEFUCKED

Another band from Canada (Manitoba this time, like Archagathus and Violent Gorge) and another good one! Skatefucked is the second (I think) effort from Hostile Life, after their 2009 demo CD-r and features six tracks of pure old school American hardcore, mixed with a small amount of thrashcore. Starting from the title of this EP there’s a strong skate-core influence in this CD, easily tracking back to classics such as JFA. Even if it sounds very fresh and personal this record is really stuck in the 80′s American hardcore environment. Along JFA I can add a bit of the early Black Flag, the slower side of Youth Of Today and somehow a little bit of Gorilla Biscuit, especially vocal wise. There’s a very strong “everyday life” feeling going throufh Skatefucked, with lyrics dealing with common issues and normal people’s problem. The songwriting, as stated above, is really fresh and you can enjoy it at multiple levels. Personally, I really like the faster parts switched with the very cool bass lines, while the acid vocals are a great addition to an overall pleasant EP. Grab it!

I had no relation to either band on this split, having never heard of them before. Since Kali’s name was first on the cover I gave their side a listen, not knowing what I was about to hear. But I can tell you I didn't anticipate anything this rad. From the first spastic blast and frantic scream I fell in love with Kali. At one moment it’s slow hardcore with a touch of aggression, only to turn into aggravated assault in the blink of an eye. The main vocals actually remind me of a mixture between those of Macabre and Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and as soon as I started thinking in those terms I realized it carries even more similarities to the latter of the bands; also song structure wise. And as acts like Boycot, xBraniax, Fatal Nunchaku, Kung Fu Rick and whatnot goes through my mind the result couldn’t be anything but fantastic. A keen sense of riffing, quick tempo changes, tons of diversity in such short songs, excellent vocals and just a buttload of energy and intensity. This is what fastcore should sound like (or is it powerviolence? I don’t know, but either way it kicks some major fucking ass).
Looking through Ultimate Blowup’s thanks list I found two bands that really caught my attention; Burial Invocation and Sakatat, two awesome bands from Turkey. So without looking them up I figured these guys were Turkish too (now I know they are, but I just assumed at first). That’s really a scene on the rise, and there seems to come more and more great acts from the country, be it grindcore, death or black metal. And with Ultimate Blowup I have to add fastcore to the list. In many ways it carries similarities to Boycot and such, but as Kali had a more frantic blasting touch these guys seem to focus a little more on the hardcore side of the matter. It feels like some form of positive youth hardcore as a base, but with the added flair of blasting and brutal aggression. The dual vocal recipe works really well, one of which is quite harsh, the other unfortunately sounds a bit like a stale distorted background shout. It takes away a bit of the intensity, but since the material is too strong to ignore I can’t help but dig it.

Beide Bands führen einen transatlantischen Schulterschluss (inklusive Mittelpfütze) aus (Royal Canadian Mounted Police trifft Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü, den türkischen Polizeiknüppel), stehen sich in ihrer Allianz musikalisch recht nah und zerstören skrupellos die morgendliche Idylle. Vorbei ist die Ruhe, als der Bär noch hinter den Busch kacken konnte, ohne dass der Jägersmann ihm eine auf den Pelz brennen wollte. Beide Bands drücken ohne zu zögern ab und veranlassen Mutter Natur zu panischem Fluchtverhalten, weil ihr ungehemmtes Hatecore / Powerviolence Schrotfeuer im Nacken sitzt. Schrammeliges Gitarrenwirrwarr, hektisches Durcheinandergebrüllkreischgeschrei, wenig Akkorde, viel Aussagekraft! Kurz und knapp, dafür gezielt, das scheint mir die Maxime im Aufeinandertreffen zweier Radau-, und Gewaltmobs. Tempo spielt eine große Rolle, gut umgesetzt in seinen beiden Versionen, eben jenen die bei solch (ab)gearteter Ruhestörung gerade noch als innovativer Kunstgriff statthaft sind, ganz schnell … oder eben nicht. Kehlen werden heiser, Muskeln und Nerven stehen unter dauerhafter Anspannung, Schweiß durchtränkt ausgewaschene T – Shirts, Kippen, Bier, Blut an Fingerknöcheln, der Geschmacksverzerrer bringt die eigenen Eltern dazu, das Erbe der Caritas zu spenden! Ihr erkennt euch dabei? , dann müsst ihr euch diese 7er angeln, kaufen, klauen oder selber malen. Auf jeden Fall lohnt sich der Erwerb für all jene, die Sonntags gern mit dem umgebauten Rasenmäher durch die Kleingartenkolonie knattern, Fahnenmasten und Hecken niederpflügen und gläsernes Alkoholleergut über den Zaun des piefigen Nachbarn donnern. Wenn ihr die innige Freundschaft zur Schrebersekte dann noch mit solcher Musik herausfordert, könnt ihr gar nicht mehr verlieren. Für mich persönlich haben KALI etwas die Nase vorn, da sie ziemlich nassforsch über meine Neuronenautobahn preschen und irgendwas dabei berührt (respektive zerstört) haben müssen, ich finde sie einfach einen Tick prägnanter, mit etwas mehr Biss. Aber generell stehen beide wie schon erwähnt Hand in Hand am Abgrund humanoider Dekadenz, werfen ihr Puzzleteilchen zur Vollendung des menschlichen Gesamtbildes, zur Abrundung terrestrischen Überflusses und Wahnsinns über die Klippe. Das Geschmetter wird euch unterhalten, wenn ihr nicht unbedingt Harmonie zum Frühstück braucht und gern auch mal mit Gewalt und Verderbtheit in den grauen Morgen startet. Freut euch auf die passende Mucke, dem Tag in den Arsch zu treten!

Kali + Ultimate Blowup Split

This split brings together Kali from Canada with 8 songs, and Ultimate Blowup from Turkey with 6 songs. UxBx is without a doubt a grinding hardcore punk band in the vein of Infest, Rot and Denak, with a similar quality to them. Something they should cherish. I love that kind of sound.Kali does remind of a similar style but plays more Grindcore. The 6 tracks on this release know a lot of slow moments with howling screams resonating through all. This is quite a key feature because this sprecific vocal sound builds up a nice tension in combination with the slow musical aggression that is perfectly balanced against the bursts of blastbeats. Outside the fact that the production leans pretty far into the background, for my taste, I see no problem in giving them a good rating. I hope we can look forward to more future releases from both bands.

Blowing-Up Kali was the Ultimate Sacrilege

Starting a record with birds tweeting is never a good sign. It’s always a premonition that something really hard and heavy is going to smash your poor face. Kali doesn’t fail the expectations and drills your ears with five songs (plus the tweeting intro) of pure, old school unrelenting powerviolence. Music wise they focus on the contrast between their three souls : blistering speed, breath-taking groovy parts and knee crushing slow tempos. You can draw the influences to the good ol’ times and if you close your eyes you can shift the band hometown from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada to Berkeley, California, USA. They are rad, fast and love to switch from one speed to the other, giving a lot of fresh air to their songs, which can be listened a lot of times in a row without growing old at all. There’s the speed of bands like Capitali$ Casualties and the primal rage of Neanderthal, while Kali demonstrates to have learned to lesson given by Man Is The Bastard in their early days : if you go slow you can hit as hard as if you go fast. Yes, I know, Kali focuses mainly on high speed, but when they slow down are really intense and can grip their hands on your weak neck very, very easily. Speaking of more modern bands, I can draw a comparison to early The Endless Blockade or, more easily, to Life Iron Lung Death by Iron Lung. Vocals are also very cool, but this is a steady factor on both sides. The main style is a pissed off ultra high pitched shriek, not so far from the fast screaming of Charles Bronson fame (even if someone will also say it sounds like Gronibard!), while there some classic lower barks here and there that come directly from the common hardcore background all the mentioned bands have. Lyrics wise they talk about everyday negativity raised by mindless people, numb religion fanatics and so on. Even if the subjects are everything but new, their writing style is very good and makes these topics fresh and interesting. Well, this band is REALLY good and I think I’ll also grab their self titled full EP, because what I’ve heard here is not enough to satisfy my Kali hunger!

I think I could be surprised to find an hardcore/powerviolence band from Turkey, but after Mondo Gecko and {{{D9}}} from Israel, Coffee Rage and Gawj from New Zealand and, well, Sakatat from Turkey, I won’t be surprised by anything. Ultimate Blowup had already won the award for one of the best cover art of the last times with their self titled EP, so they started their career with the right foot and this split EP with Kali makes their reputation even stronger. Their style is more straight forward, more classic if you want, dealing more with extremely pissed off hardcore fueled with some tempo changes, like the last part of Disillusioned and Cast Out. I can’t complain about music. I really love hardcore when it gets REALLY fast and starts to be distorted, dissonant and overall pissed off like every band members’ car has been removed by cops (stupid example, but that’s the true story of my last weekend). There’s a very cool bass sound going on here and in the rare moments when it gets loose it’s really entertaing. Being honest, everything turns out to be very cool on this record, with a lot of tempo changes, very fast and brutal sonic assault, spoken words, ultra-effective drum lines and, above all, vocals. Yes, vocals are surely the best parts of this side of this split EP, with the two singers, Can -also on guitar- and Bariş -also on bass-, making a wide range of vocals creating a very cool Spazz effect. High tones, lower tones, mid ones, fast barking, slower growling and so on. The vocal lines reminds me a lot of a mix of Lack Of Interest and No Comment, making them really near to the Low Threat Profile’s records. Well, even on this side there’s a high level of quality, so I expect to see Ultimate Blowup raging around a lot in the next months!

Gawj are not enough far away from Japan for not seeing it

Ok, this record should be bought even just for the title. So Far Away From Giving A Fuck That We Can’t Be Seen. Holy shit, THAT’S a title. Gawj hails from New Zealand and I’ve already said How much I’m amused to listen to a band from such an uncommon country. While Coffee Rage focuses on the powerviolence/grindcore spectrum of the core music, Gawj deepn their roots in the mid 80′s hardcore/metalpunk/protogrind scene, making their way with chaos and dissonance. I think everyone knows GISM (I REALLY hope so) and how they changed the meaning of the acronym of their monicker on each record, well Gawj starts the list of things that reminds me of that era changing the way Gawj is spelled on the layout for at least foure times : Gawj, G-awj, Gäwj and G-äwj. Yeah, I know, It’s a very tiny thing, but I was immediarely caught by it and got stuck in my mind. Gawj focuses on a chaotic bland of mid 80′s hardcore, mainly in its Japanese version, with the classic frantic and blistering fast drum lines covered in a dissonant and fuzzy wave of guitar riffs. Feedbacks are used quite often, while a good bunch of facemelting solos can be enjoyed throught the record. Vocals are delivered in a ultra classic and old school sleazy barking, which sounds a lot like Chronos singing on a Repulsion cover made by Gai. Gai, GISM, Gastunk, Gauze (Gauze and Gawj…mmmm…just a coincidence?) are some of the names that I can use for describing the sound of Gawj, even if the NZ’s band follows a somewhat more aggressive path, like all those bands combined and reloaded after twenty years of extreme music.Sometimes they lean to a more grindcore environment, even if they are not touching it, because feet are steady on an hardcore ground. Thrash metal, expecially its more contaminated version, is also recognizable here, with a little bit of the early efforts of bands like Sodom or Kreator popping here and there. Lyrics wise you can figure out what to expect just to read the bands I’ve quoted above and than looking at the cover art. They mix an apocalyptic and often dramatic view on society and humanity, sometimes filtered with a nice dose of black humour. This record can sound a little bit too derivative and, well, I think it is, but it’s indeed enjoyable and even if it may sound like the billionth time you’re listening to this stuff I think it’s a kind of music that can never grow old. I want to reccomend it to all the classic Japanese hardcore (I KNOW I don’t have to call it Japcore, I know) fans, who can find twelve minutes of good old school fun, for the newbies of the genre I think they can have more fun with the classics before switching to Gawj.

As all of the Idoneum Bello releases expect a very good packaging, with full color artwork, a booklet with lyrics and the always appreciated obi strip that seals the package. Also for this one, huge thanks to Mat!

Mad Blasts Of Reviews VOL. 1 – DISCONNECTED / WASTELAND

If I have to point out a word when I’ve received the parcel from Idoneum Bello, it must be NEW. My order was driven by Sick/Tired, a band I started to love with their recent Full LP Highlife, but I was smashed by a good bunch of new bands, having the pleasure to listen to their very good efforts. On this post I’m gonne review the first of two chapter of the Mad Blasts Of Chaos saga. What are the characteristics of this saga? Well, the four bands featured on these two 7″ are all dwelling in the fast hardcore/powerviolence environment, even with differences between their styles. Plus these releases share the same amazing layout, with a very cool obi wrapping the top-opened envelope-like cover. Well, let’s stop talking about the whole picture and let’s go into deep with the first chapter of Mad Blasts Of Chaos.

Side A is ripped apart by Disconnected, a band hailing from Ohio, USA, formed by four sickos kidnapped by other local bands (like As Good As Dead, Full Scale Panic and Premonitions Of War). They kick in with four tracks of fast, punishing and somewhat dark pissed off hardcore, leaning sometimes to some crazy old school grindcore, with its oversatured sound and sharp drums beats. There’s a very cool taste in songwriting, with a lot of tempo changes and a nice structure often made by mixing open chords, short hypersonic riffs and simple yet violent drums lines. I really love the parts when Disconnected seems to take a little breath just to come back smashing your face with pure hardcore mid tempo parts, like in Broken Heart Suicide. They put some solos here and there, with the classic high pitched fast series of notes that reminds me the classics from early 90′s. There’s also a cool usage of the vocals. While Patrick’s way of singing can sound a little bit too linear and monotonic, he manages to dominate the scene with a passionate way of spitting out his hate that reminded me the vocal lines of Andy on the Low Threat Profile 12″. This is a very cool side and even if it’s my first time with Disconnected I really hope to listen to more by them really soon.

On the flipside there’s Wasteland from New Zealand. They’re more stuck to the classic powerviolence formula, so expect five songs built from an amazing bunch of tempo changes, slow downs, accelerations, nervous vocals and mind blowing drumming. Guitars and bass create a very enjoyable wall of sound, with a lot of distortions and feedback, also putting the always welcomed fuzzy feeling to each note. There’s a good bunch of slow parts that will make you scream the name of this band in your bedroom hoping to be at one of their gig. Just Scared, People and Sore Loser are perfect examples of how powerviolence should be played in 2011. Put your slow part in, make it punishing, unforgiving, then explode with a super catchy and even funny fast section. Rorschach meeting Charles Bronson. Make the dark part darker and the bright part brighter, make the difference not just big, but EXTREMELY big. Very cool indeed. I want to spend a couple of words on the vocals. Kader has done a very good job singing, using a very enjoyable and uncommon tone for most of the parts, not far from Infest, while he goes a little bit down with his voice he reminds me good ol’ Lack Of Interest.

Well, a very, VERY good split, give it a spin and you won’t be disappointed

Mad Blasts Of Reviews VOL. 2 – SICK/TIRED – COFFEE RAGE

The second chapter of the Mad Blasts Of Chaos series opens with Sick/Tired, a very good band which features members from MK-Ultra and Weekend Nachos. This is their first effort, recently followed by their full length Highlife released by To Live A Lie. These bunch of borderline fuckers delivers four songs of pissed off hardcore which can be called either powerviolence or grindcore without making a mistake. The first thing that will pop out listening to the Sick/Tired side is the pounding way that Gonzo and Kirk are playing their instruments, respectively guitar and bass, giving to each song a strong feeling of brutal violence. Drumming is cool, with a bunch of great mid tempos, like in Another Day, while vocals are stuck to a classic acid growl, which gives to this record a good early 90′s grindcore vibe. I think the best song of this side is Death In California, which can sound both punishingly intense and funny. There are a lot of good intentions going on here, but I think you can feel that they needed a bit more time to let everything take shape. Highlife is better than this first EP, even if they were already displaying a very good taste in songwriting. I want to show my appreciation of the drawings on the inlays, a steady standard in quality from Sick/Tired. This time the cover is very simple, with just the logo, but the inlays feature an amazing rip off of classic Janis Joplin’s Cheap Thrills cover, obviously re-adapted to grindcore and powerviolence imaginary. Follow this band, because Sick/Tired is a name you will hear a lot in the near future!

First of all, I’m VERY happy that I can talk about a band from New Zealand. I’m always down to find bands from unusual places and when the quality is like the one showed by Coffee Rage is a double winning! Coffee Rage assaults your ears with seven songs of restless old school grind…no…ehm…power…well….crust….not even there….hardc…Fuck, they mix a lot of style, imagine a very good blend of grinding powerviolence but with a strong influence by old school hardcore and bass pounding crust. The result is a bunch of songs which sound sometimes violent, sometimes groovy as fuck. Coffee Rage can create both the feeling of smashing someone’s nose with your forehead multiple times, both the one of dancing in the moshpit waving your arms and headbanging till your neck snaps. Lyrics are quite standards for the genre, mainly dealing with hatred and personal issues, with a black humor twist. Vocals are various, mainly dwelling in the pissed off bark environment, classic crusty Agathocles style, with some parts sung in screaming or with a deeper growl. There aren’t slow parts on this side, with all the songs going full throttle without losing the groovy factor. Discharge meeting classic grindcore. This record can be like by a lot of different people, because it combines pieces of many genres creating an all around enjoyable jigsaw of aural violence. Also this side pleases the sight, with a nice cover and a very funny ripoff of the cover from Lotta Per Vivere by Wrecthed (or at least, I think so….I’m pretty sure that design was also featured on a previous record but I can’t recall which one…anyway, if someone knows it, comment!).

Well, another good chapter in the Mad Blasts Of Chaos Series by Idoneum Bello, I can’t wait for the new one whichm by the way, will come out very soon…

Kali / Ultimate Blowup - Split 7"

More explosive grind from Germany's 7 Degrees Records (this time with the help of #1 D ad Records, Idoneum Bello Records, Incursion Records, and Spastic Fantastic). K ali (Canada) kicks things off with six tracks generally powered by frantic speeds, high/low vocals, and a couple of slower, pounding tempos for good measure. There are no gaps in between the songs either, they just cave in to a bit of feedback and then keep going. The primary vocals are snotty, bitter high-end yells, and that works well with the overall energy of the tracks. Ultimate Blowup (Turkey) then follows with eight songs of their own take on an extremely similar sound. There's a little more differentiation between the high/low vocals, and both vocalists have a little bit of an unusual ring to their voices, but otherwise the approach is damn near the same, so it's a great match-up. Both bands also utilize production values that are perfect for this style: Balanced yet rugged, unpolished without losing detail, etc. At 14 tracks in only 11 minutes, I'm not sure what more to say here. If you're a fan of fast, energetic, grinding hardcore/punk that likely would've been right at home on Slap a Ham Records 15+ years ago, I see no reason why you wouldn't enjoy the hell out of this split…

after a lot of delays the 3rd part of the MAD BLASTS OF CHAOS series, which will be shared by New Zealand's ENTRAILS and Canada's GOOD THINGS, finally made it to the pressing plant. MAD BLASTS OF CHAOS VOL. III will have a print-run of 500 copies of which 300 will be on black vinyl, 100 will be on mint colored vinyl and another 100 are supposed to be on either red or orange vinyl and will have 3 tracks from each band. the packaging will be similar to the packaging of MAD BLASTS OF CHAOS VOL. I & II which means the 7" will come with inlays plus stickers and will be sealed with an obi-strip. the picture on the left shows stickers of both bands and you probably would recognize it yourself anyway but I'll tell you that the GOOD THINGS sticker reads "I support abortion!" myself right now nevertheless.

KALI // ULTIMATE BLOWUP – Split 7”

Knüppel aus dem Sack!!! So und nicht anders lautet die Devise dieser Split-7“, die eine Spur der Verwüstung hinter sich herzieht. Absoluter Wahnsinn! Angetreten zu der antimusikalischen Keilerei sind zum einen die (vermutlich) frei nach der hinduistischen Göttin des Todes und der Zerstörung (nach das passt ja…) benannten KALI aus Kanada und ULTIMATE BLOWUP aus der Türkei. Tja, was soll ich sagen? Beide Knüppelkommandos schenken sich nichts und gehen entweder heftig oder aber sehr heftig zur Sache. Knöpfen wir uns zunächst mal KALI vor, die uns mit 5 Granaten (+ Intro) verwöhnen, welche sich irgendwo zwischen schädelspaltendem Fastcore/Thrash (teilweise hart an der Grenze zum Grindcore!) ohne Speedlimit und furios vorgetragenem Powerviolence bewegen. AnhängerInnen der Materie fliegt hier garantiert das Blech weg! Killen tun KALI aber nicht nur im Highspeedsektor, sondern auch immer dann, wenn sie mal ein bis zwei Gänge zurückschalten – Hölle! Das alles wurde dazu noch verdammt knallig und mit jeder Menge Druck in Szene gesetzt, so dass eigentlich keine Wünsche offen bleiben. An der Vocalsfront rult hysterisches Geschrei (kommt übrigens sehr geil!) und/oder kehlig-heiseres Gebrüll, wobei mir scheint, als ob da wirklich jemand verdammt wütend und angepisst gewesen ist, als er das Mic malträtierte. Warum, das wird angesichts der in den superben Texten (lesen!) verarbeiteten Themen deutlich und ist (zumindest für meine Wenigkeit) durchaus nachvollziehbar. Großes Kino jedenfalls und zwar in allen Belangen! Davon will ich unbedingt mehr! Auf der Flipside ballert der Splitpartner ULTIMATE BLOWUP dann nicht minder heftig, wenngleich in antimusikalischer Hinsicht etwas andere (und trotzdem artverwandte) Wege beschreitend, los. Schnell (bzw. sehr schnell) sind die 8 Songs allemal. Ganz so knüppelig wie KALI gibt sich das türkische Trio dann aber doch nicht, denn ULTIMATE BLOWUP haben sich eher dem alte Schule Stop’n’Go Thrashcore-Sound verschrieben, Powerviolence-Anleihen inklusive. Dass dabei die göttlichen INFEST des Öfteren Pate gestanden haben, ist für mich genauso sicher, wie der nicht zu überhörende Einfluss von SPAZZ (check out the vokills!). Muss ich da jetzt noch großartig Worte zu verlieren? Ich glaube nicht! Was die Texte anbelangt, so findet man lediglich die Lyrics zum Song „Disillusioned And Cast Out“ im Booklet und die weisen drauf hin, dass sich da durchaus jemand ’nen Kopf macht. In diesem Sinne: Thrash to the max, play fast, die slow!

THE 1st REVIEW OF THE SETE STAR SEPT 12"

the 1st review of the SETE STAR SEPT 12": This is an absolute mess in the very best way. Sete Star Sept’s form of grinding chaos sounds refreshingly different, taking its cues from classics of the old and new schools of grind and noisecore, but with bizarre song un-structures that give things an almost organic, improvised feel. This is not to say that it’s loose and unfocussed, as the interplay between the three players (including drummer Kiyasu, who was in the first incarnation of The Endless Blockade) is totally locked down, with them meeting at crucial stop-start moments in suitably tight fashion. These vicious slashes of sound are almost too much to take in, with an inordinate amount packed in to 15 minutes, but it’s basically a pretty amazing exercise in humans making as inhuman a racket as possible.

From the opening squelch of feedback that heralds COFFEE RAGE’s ‘Never Restrictions’, you find yourself in a world of hellacious Hardcore, inflammable thrash (that a disease??!) and explosive Crust-tinged Punk. New Zealand’s COFFEE RAGE pummel with seven tracks that borrow heavily from ‘Why’era DISCHARGE while throwing in the sounds of KAAOS/ RIISTETYT Finnish Punk to create thrashing, convulsive HC. Highlight lays in ‘Passing Shot At The Jesus Kids’, although the disdain of ‘Avalanche Of Shit’ comes a close second. DeKalb's SICK/TIRED have released their 1st full-length on TO LIVE A LIE RECORDS (it was supposed to be released on COALITION RECORDS but COALITION has gone belly up). as I was a little bit involved in putting out their debut split 7" my opinion could be seen as a bit prejudiced... anyway, believe it or not the 12", which is called HIGH LIFE is a fucking ripper! I knew that already before I got a physical copy of the record cause the tracks were all recorded in the same session than the 4 tracks on the split 7" and Kirk had sent the whole session my way quite some time ago and which lead to their appearance in the MAD BLASTS OF CHAOS series. the 12" is available in 3 different colors: black, red (ltd. to 100 copies) and gray (ltd. to 22 copies). as you can see on the pics below Kirk was kind enough to send me one of the 22 gray copies. as I haven't seen a physical copy on red I don't know if the red ones also come with a certificate like that you can see below which came with my gray one. the artwork of the cover and the inlay is also totally rad! seriously, in my opinion SICK/TIRED are one of the best bands around right now and if you like your HARDCORE fast and furious you should do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of HIGH LIFE! you can check out one track here.

Next we have Coffee Rage's "Needles in Eyes" 3" released last year on Idoneum Bello. Mat went ahead and gave me the green light on posting this since very few were made (30 copies I believe, 10 with white covers). I also have to hand it to him...this record is neat as hell (packaging and all), and I have never once seen a 3" record before now. Coffee Rage serve up 3 tracks of raw and thrashing hc on this record. If you've heard them before, then you know to expect some unrelenting and vicious tunes here! This is the second installment in the Mad Blasts of Chaos series released by Idoneum Bello Records, featuring two killer bands...Sick/Tired from the states (Illinois to be exact) and Coffee Rage from New Zealand. Sick/Tired serve up 4 vicious tracks of raging fast thrash/hardcore and feature ex-members of several other top notch bands including MK-Ultra, Right to Remain, Exalted and Weekend Nachos to name a few. Coffee Rage, who share members with Gawj and Asscharger, keep the momentum rolling with 7 tracks of raw and energetic hardcore. SCOTIA WIDOWS is another band that Kirk of SICK/TIRED plays in. if you expect them to be another FASTCORE / HARDCORE band like MK-ULTRA, SICK/TIRED, etc. let me tell you: you are wrong! in Kirk's own words: "Scotia Widows is basically me from mk-ultra with the drummer and guitarist from Pedestrians and the girl singing is from a lesser known chicago band called Venom Lords. Also, the "male" vocals are me singing. We have gotten comparisons to old Dangerhouse bands and Husker Du. It seems like a fair comparison." I guess I agree. but nevertheless SCOTIA WIDOWS are still a strange beast as there are some points where music and vocals seem to so far apart from one another that this must also be the reason that they still connect somehow. as I got a weak spot for female vocals I like it a lot! the physical copies of the CD-R were ltd. to 100 if you didn't get one click the pic for an mp3 rip of the demo.

GÄWJ - So Far Away From Giving A Fuck We Can’t Be Seen {Idoneum Bello} Ever wonder what it’s like to have your face burnt off while simultaneously being ripped a new arsehole? Wonder no more because New Zealand’s very own GÄWJ will sort both issues out! This is a trip-to-hell 15-track 7" pressed on resplendent white vinyl that melds the spastic blur of the most ferocious Japanese HC (think LIP CREAM), a WARCOLLAPSE-esque Crust vocal assault and some down-tuned Metal riffage to create a noise that is guaranteed to dissolve the bowel of any Gaslight Anthem fan at 50 paces. The opening squeal of feedback heralds one of the highlights, ‘Buried Under 1000 Years Of Shit’. The feedback continues to assail the ears between every track with ‘Roadside Slaughter’ and ‘All Burn Together’ being other notables. Packaging is top stuff too with a fold out poster, inner sleeve and full lyrics. I personally could’ve done without so much Metal in the sound, but when a track like ‘Fuck Your World’ hits, then all is fine by me! (11.10.09)

Hamilton band Gawj may have flown under most radars, but that's probably the way they want it. Don't believe that? Maybe the title of their latest vinyl 7" will give it away � the charmingly named, So Far Away From Giving A Fuck That We Can't Be Seen.

I actually have a CD-R version to review with no tracklist and has two six-and-a-half-minute tracks on it, even though the 7" apparently contains 15 songs packed into those 13 minutes. So forgive the lack of individual song mentions, but in the case of So Far Away..., it probably is not required in any case.

This is a ferocious barrage of a release, the songs racing past at breakneck speed and full intensity all the way through. There is not the slightest concession to verses and choruses or, fuck it, even melodies. This is about mainlining despair and aggression in the purest way possible. Drums clatter frenetically, guitars feedback and vocals shriek incomprehensibly. Easy listening, this ain't.

In spite of all that, while the intensity never lulls, Gawj introduce a fair amount of variety into their work. Tempo changes, samples, groove variation and more mean there is more to chew on here than sheer ferocity. If there is a criticism, it may be that Gawj have not forged their own unique sound; this release sounds like a number of other bands. But when they're doing it as well as this, who really cares?

A take-no-prisoners 'fuck off' statement as blunt as its title, So Far Away From Giving A Fuck That We Can't Be Seen is a short, sharp shock meant for the die-hard fans of the genre.

Sick/Tired rocks on the flip side of punk/metal collaboration

The history of punk rock music is laden with bands that, unable to afford putting out a record themselves, seek out another band to split the costs and resulting album with.

DeKalb punk/metal band “Sick/Tired” was recently fortunate enough to do just that, recording a split seven-inch vinyl record with New Zealand punk band “Coffee Rage.” Assembled by Idoneum Bello Records from Germany, “Sick/Tired” and “Coffee Rage” have managed to collaborate on one of the best records to have a local band’s name on it in a long time.

The first side of this record is by “Sick/Tired.” Formed only last year, this is the group’s first time on record. These guys may get lumped into the “grindcore” or “powerviolence” subcategories of music, but apparently refuse to limit themselves to just one label.

In just four blistering tracks, the band proves that short and simple songs can have just as much of an impact as any double-album rock opera. By laying on plenty of R-rated lyrics, and alternating between furious thrash metal and slow, catchy jams, “Sick/Tired” has managed to put together a hook-filled record that sets them far apart from their often untalented peers. This side is perfect for people with short attention spans and a taste for intense music.

“Coffee Rage” from New Zealand is the band on the flip side of this record. Formed in 2007, broken up by late 2008, and re-formed earlier this year, the band contributed a seven-song long attack to this venture. Loaded with non-stop drumbeats and depressing yet comical lyrics, these recordings yield a solid effort of no real note. The band does not try to re-invent the wheel, but they do what they do and they do it well.

The first track, “Never Restrictions”, set the bar fairly high for the rest of the songs. Sadly, they only reach that peak, never moving past it and often only imitating it. The first few listens prove to be enjoyable, but it soon feels like it’s time to move on. The clever wordplay in the lyrics only maintains its novelty for so long without catchy riffs to back them up.

Overall, this record was pretty great. “Sick/Tired” delivers an amazing onslaught of riff-heavy hardcore punk that should have taken up the whole record, while “Coffee Rage”, though talented, fail to make any real impression on the listener. Gallo recommended this band to me, and I don't know much about these guys except that they are from France and this EP is killer. The first thing that popped into my head upon first listening to this record was that if bands like Gauze, GISM or Gai were French...this could possibly be the outcome. Check it out.

Q: will I give you records on consignment?

the bottom line is if you want any records from me you pay upfront! yes, that includes you too so there's no need to ask if you couldn't be the exception to the rule!

Q: will I trade my releases against yours?

A: your chances are rather thin!

I don't run a mailorder or have a recordstore or whatever. therefore I just wouldn't know what to do with the records I'd get for mine. I did some trades (e.g. with Ivan/FUCK YOGA) but that's the exception to the rule and I really feel flattered when people ask me but till the day I can pay the pressing plants with those records be prepared to get NO for an answer.

SHORTLIVED are somehow persecuted from bad luck as it seems. they got 2 different 7"es in the 2 different pressing plants and neither of them made it to me for the start of their tour. the 1st master CD for their MINDROT 7" vanished into thin air in te mail and when the 2nd master CD finally arrived we had to find out that they fucked something up while mastering their recordings and cause of that it isn't ready yet. the 2nd 7", with the 8 tacks from their demo CD-R (which I have already ordered about 9 or 10 weeks ago and which is a white label pressing ltd. to 200) has had problems in the cuting and plating process but should be here on Tuesday.

edit: that means you probably can buy the SHORTLIVED - MINDROT 7" for the 1st time in Vienna on the 14th and on all shows after that one.

SHORTLIVED's demo 7" will hopefully make it back from the plant on the 18th so the 1st show where it will be sold should be on the 19th in Bremen where I'd deliver it myself as no one else would.

on your GAWJ or KALI I 7"es a look at the pics will tell you who's to blame. Chabo loves boxes and therefore Chabo sqatted the boxes I had just bought to send GAWJ and KALI their part of the pressings and refused to leave it if I wouldn't let him switch to the other one. of course I could've "used force" to remove him but I knowing I can't make him stop going on my nerves I decided that Monday would also be ok to send out the parcels!

KILL THE I.B.M. was the name of a tape from Nippon's LIP CREAM... now, as I got more GAWJ 7"es than covers the remaining GAWJ 7"es will come with a KILL THE I.B.R. cover which is a piss-take of, you guessed it, the cover of said LIP CREAM tape!

well, as you can see some of the COFFEE RAGE 3"es will have yellow covers and some will have white covers but both versions will have obis that are too little cause my printer didn't print them in the correct size for whatever reason and the printer in the printing shop printed them even smaller. very strange! anyway, I made new ones on my dad's laser printer!

hmm, actually "finished" isn't really true cause not all of them have their obi strips yet but besides that the 3"es would be ready to go.

I cut and glued all 30 covers myself after I realized that my 1st plan of just folding them didn't make them look like they were supposed to look... so I cut & glued them so they were transformed to bags and included an additional lyric sheet!

I think I said that before but for the record once again: I wanted to do 100 copies to get a reasonable price but as the pressing plant refuses to take orders with quantities of more than 30 copies at a single blow I could choose to do it in spite of the fact that it will be fucking expensive or not doing it at all. truth be told the two main reasons for doing it were/are that I'm a record nerd and didn't have a 3" in my collection yet and that I have a weakness for 8"es and records with a smaller size than your typical 7".

COFFEE RAGE's NEEDLES IN EYES 3" will be 12€ / 16$ NOT including postage!

I know that's a ridiciulously high price but, believe it or not that's even some cents below the actual manufacturing costs! in case you didn't understand that: I'm selling them at a loss (not a big loss just some cents but...) so don't cry me a river cause of the price - you don't have to buy one!

in case you want a copy in spite of the high price let me tell you that you can pre-order/reserve the 3" from now on (there are 16 copies left at the moment) via e-mail (am.i.mean@gmail.com) but as the rules of engagement in the MAD BLASTS OF CHAOS series say that only bands that haven't released vinyl of their own will be included it won't be shipped before the release of the SICK/TIRED & COFFEE RAGE split 7" which is in about 3 weeks.

you need to tell me if you'd send cash or use paypal and where you live in that mail so I can figure out the postage (if you're from New Zealand you can get them from NO WAY OUT REC.)

with a brilliant demo is called KALI! when I was told that the 5 guys are just between 16 and 19 years old I decided that their demo is way to good to be unheard and therefore I'll do a 7" re-issue of their demo. as the 7" is already in the pressing plant it shouldn't take that long till it sees the light of day. 8 tracks = 6 and a half minutes of mayhem!
